The Trevi Fountain is also a place we found ourselves stumbling upon three times during our visit-- once because we trekked there, the other two times simply because it's so damn smack in the middle of the city. During the last of these incidents, at three in the morning, we witness a man propose to his girlfriend on one knee. Needless to say, we oohed and aww-ed, captured the whole thing on video, and sent it to them a few hours later. Make some memories here.

It's extremely difficult to get close to Trevi Fountain because of all the people around, but if you are determined, you will do it. We took lots of pictures here.

The Trevi fountain is just magical. I visited about four times during my stay in Rome and even tossed a coin over my shoulder to bring me back to Rome again someday. The fountain marks the end of an aqueduct built over centuries and overseen by different popes. The main statue is of Ocean surrounded by several other Roman gods. The fountain is best seen at night although it gets a steady stream of visitors throughout the day.

My first encounter was late at night while walking to a local club with my tour group. There was barely a soul around so we had the opportunity to take as many unencumbered photos as we pleased. The second trip during the day was hectic at best and I got a few photos in front of the fountain before retreating to the safety of the alley. The next time at night was still just as magical. Again, there was a crowd of people but it really depends on the time of day. Finally, I saw it a last time during the day. It's hard not to pass by and look at it. Be wary of your belongings since there are plenty of pickpockets in the crowds looking for an easy mark.

Almost always filled with people but a visit to the Ancient city of Rome is not complete without stopping by this grand monument.

The Trevi Fountain was my favorite part of Roma. I loved just sitting there, people watching and listening to the water. The fountain is so detailed, with so many elements to see and photograph. It's just wonderful.

This is the Trevi Fountain in Rome. Make sure you take some coins so you can throw them in to assure you return. Hint-don't sit under the lamp posts, the birds sit above you and may leave a deposit on your shoulder.

Beautiful. Check to see if there are any special events on at night. This fountain will take your breath away and is spectacular when lit up at night.

The Trevi Fountain is currently undergoing restoration. The fountains are empty and blocked off. Not worth visiting at the moment, though surely beautiful when they're back on.

The was one of my favorite sites in Rome. Every city should have a fountain this magnificent. The statues are incredible and combined with the fountain it is literally magical to gaze upon. Its where the classic scene in La Dolce Vita with Anita Ekberg was filmed

The fountain is truly impressive. Just way too many tourists for it to really be enjoyable. Try late night or early morning if you want peace.

Fun to see both during the day and at night. Grab a gelato, sit nearby and people watch.

This is a must visit site because you need to throw in a penny to ensure your return visit to Rome. The down side is it is usually very crowded and hard to get near the water. One late evening, however, we saw the Trevi Fountain with hardly anyone there.

The fountain is beautiful, to be sure, but the crowds make it a little hard to enjoy this famous site. Too many people taking pictures, selling you something, stepping on your feet...it can be overwhelming. If you do, head over late at night when the sculpture is illuminated and the crowds thin out a bit.

Toss a coin over tour shoulder into the fountain to ensure your return to Rome. Do it. You want to come back.

One of the most famous of Rome's many beautiful fountains.

Description

Tradition has it that throwing a coin over your left shoulder into the fountain guarantees a swift return to the world's most beautiful city. Anita Ekberg's dip in it was immortalized in Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita, and Italian actor Toto even sold it to an American, passing himself off as its owner. Earlier Fontana di Trevi was the setting for the award-winning Three Coins in the Fountain motion picture, ensuring its popularity worldwide. Designed by Nicola Salvi for Pope Clemente XII, it was completed in the second half of the 18th Century. The statues in the center represent Neptune supported by Tritons on either side while rococo-style Poli Palace provides the perfect backdrop.
