Happy House Hostel

I absolutely loved this this hostel and everything about it — its contemporary, chic design (by a local designer), its attentive staff, the little touches, like giving names of regions and cities in ... read more
Chile to all its rooms and dormitories, and the hostel-branded water available in the mini bar in the entrance lounge. The redecoration that the hostel’s undergoing has already added lots of plus points — part of which includes the amazing outdoor pool and patio area where they regularly host live music events. But by far, what I loved about this hostel the most was its concern for sustainable tourism. You can recycle your batteries, some of the furniture items were created from recycled bamboo and the heaters in the rooms switch themselves off when guests leave the room. I was expecting an ordinary hostel before I arrived, but I found something much more sophisticated.

Upscale bar with live jazz. Huge array of quality wine and liquor. Great staff and a creative menu that would take months to properly explore. Meet interesting people from all over the world.

Hotel Rio

Great location. Budget price. Depressed staff. Decent rooms. But a terrific deal right near the Duomo. Breakfast is only OK. If you want a really terrific coffee and pastry go to one of the spots ... read more
around the corner. The Rio charges 5 euros per 24 hours of wifi. You could skip this since Milan is full of free wifi in public spaces, cafes and restaurants. Rio only gets three stars because I had booked my room 2.5 months previous. But when I arrived for a three-night stay, they wanted to put me in a room that would require a move. I said, No, I don't want to move. So they put me in a room with no air conditioning. (It was 11 pm and my will was fading.) It was a comfortable night, and I had the window open, until a smoke stack a couple of yards from the window belched wood smoke. I shut the window and realized that I was going to have to change rooms the next day. So I called the desk at 3 AM and complained bitterly about the room. I did change the next day, into cozy room 29 with A/C. One of the benefits of the location of the Rio is that you can run around all morning, then easily get back to the hotel for the afternoon siesta. And the siesta requires A/C on hot days. There was a refrigerator in the room, and not until my last day did I find the nearby supermarket on Via Toledo. If I'd found it sooner I would have stocked the fridge with cold drinks and treats.
