does make the building feel old, but I always thought it was fitting as the setting of so many history, religion and classics course. See if you can find the secret passage to the roof, where there are great views of the tower!

visitors and those who do drive in rarely stay long before rushing off to their next postcard spot. Apparently they offer guest rooms just outside the monastery if you wish to stay here for the night. Not sure if they provide anything to eat or not.

This monastery is in Likir, about an hour or so from Leh. Relatively easy to access, it gets a good number of visitors.

to get there from the mainland. It is very popular and known as the Shrine Island for the main Itskushima shrine. There are lots of shops, restaurants and places to stay over night. They also have deer that roam free and are considered sacred and will take your food if given a chance. The island has numerous hiking trails with nice views. It does get busy especially in cherry blossom season but it is still worth a visit.
