Happy House Hostel
Av. Catedral 2207, Barrio Brasil, Santiago, Chile
Felipe Varas' rating: 5 Aug 15, 2014
This hostel was a lot more sophisticated than the average hostel. As soon as I entered, I came across a long entrance hall and lounge space, with tall, floor-standing lamps, in a minimalist design. ... read more
This added to the sense of space and I liked that. I also liked the small touch of naming each room after a different part of Chile. I thought that was novel. The designer happens to be Chilean and was in the process of redesigning the outdoor area of the hostel when I visited. I think the pool and patio area will be amazing when fully finished. I also liked being able to choose to add heating, internet or breakfast to your bill and therefore control your expenses. The staff were superb. They were always on hand to help guests with any matter and if the management offers discounts to large groups who are staying for a long time.

Andes Hostel

I loved the location of this hostel, in the civic center, close to all the principal attractions - Parque Forestal, Santa Lucia Hill, the Fine Arts Museum and the National Library. I hate wasting time ... read more
having to use public transport to see the sights, so this was perfect for me. The main living area of the hostel was well organized - a small bar, pool table, large TV (for watching the World Cup!) and lots of large sofas. The best thing was, despite being full of furniture, there still seemed to be so much space - I don’t like feeling cramped. The special room downstairs was also really comfortable, with a large sofa to lie down on and a smaller TV for watching movies. I love my food and this hostel, thankfully, covers all corners. Forget the typical tea, coffee and bread breakfast, you can feast on eggs, cereals and fresh fruit juice too.

Bambu Desserts and Drinks

Che from BAMBU finally made it to SGV (and I finally got a chance to completed my long-overdue review!) TIP 1 & 2) Seating is extremely limited so be prepared to order to-go. The few times I've one, ... read more
the line has gone out the door! Don't forget the $10 minimum for credit card! TIP 3) Call ahead and place your order. Let them know you'll be picking it up in about 5-10 minutes. They should be able to do it! =CHE/DRINKS= #1 - Bambu Special - Not sure what all the hype about #1 is. Coconut, panda jelly, longan, basil seed, coconut juice. Honestly, it tastes kind of bland to me and I have no idea why the longan is so overpowering for me. Yes, it's refreshing. Yes, it's good. But no...it's not my favorite, nor will it ever be. #5 - No...just, no. Bo Dam - Avocado, pearl, dark brick & combo jelly. Okay, I loooooove avocados, BUT I don't like warm, smashed up avocados mixed with boba. This is a great lesson for me to read the menu (or even look at the picture) carefully. Yes, it's warm, and only cools down with the bit of ice on top. #6 - FAVORITE!!! You must get this! Chè Trái Cay - Lychee, longan, red tapioca, jackfruit, palm seed, jello, panda jelly, coconut. Although I'm not the biggest fan of longan, the longan flavor wasn't as strong because of all the other DELICIOUS fruits in this drink. Oh my gosh! Pandan jelly and large pieces of coconut were perfect. YES! The coconut milk was smooth, creamy and light. Such a refreshing drink with all the fruits that you forgot to eat that day! I have to say this is the perfect Vietnamese dessert for me! #10 - 2ND FAVORITE (very close to first!) - Hat luu suong sáo bánh lot - red tapioca, grass jelly, pandan jelly, and coconut milk. This used to be my favorite until I tried #6. The crunchy red tapioca, the grass jelly and the pandan jelly were perfect for me. Jellies were light, refreshing and not too sweet. Put all of these together with coconut milk, and you got the perfect summer dessert! There were no beans in it, so everything was easy to chew and swallow. And since all the jellies, tapioca, and milk were not overly sweet, this is perfect! #31. Iced Hazelnut Mocha Blend - Oh my lord...this was strong and waaaaay too sweet for me. It was even too sweet for my boyfriend (who loves his coffee sweet, and who can't get enough vietnamese coffee). Unfortunately, i won't be ordering this again any time soon. =FINAL VERDICT= For delicious, refreshing, and unique Vietnamese dessert drinks, come by for a wonderful treat! =D Avoid lines by calling ahead and picking it up.

North county tavern and bowl is a swanky bowling alley/bar in the North County Fair Mall. Sometimes the wait for shoes and service can be a little long but the food and drinks are tasty.
