Everyone raves about the transportation system in Portland and it is quite nice and convenient compared to transportation systems in other American cities. Clean and simple and downtown it's even free, Portland's transport lives up to it's reputation.Recommended for:

Mostly dependable and mostly clean. If you're not used to strangers talking to you, this is not the ride for you. The max downtown is really nice to jumping all over the city and for just 5$ for all day!Recommended for:

Portland has an excellent public transportation system, and is seen as a model for other cities. A whole fleet of new streetcars will soon be coming up, too, connecting more of the city. The only problem is that the lines stop running around midnight or 1 am so it's not too convenient for people going out partying. Passes are affordable and it's convenient for cyclists (you can take your bike on the Max and there are bike racks on all the buses).Recommended for:

Public Transit in Portland is hard to beat and starting with the ride to Downtown from PDX. There's also a "Fareless Square" within within the Downtown Core, lots of streetcar and bus connections, and easy online trip planning. This makes things really easy to navigate around town and without a car.

As of Winter 2011, riding the streetcar through downtown locations was free. I believe the city is going to start charging at some point in the future. There is a stop directly outside of the hotel and it will take you lots of fun places on the west side of the river. Downside is it picks up a lot of university kids and makes frequent stops, so it is almost as fast to walk.
