I've been told that this part of France - which I've visited many other times using other forms of transport - is one of the best places in the world for serious road cyclists. I'm looking for some suggestions of where to hire a decent bike from (though may consider taking my own), route planning some good 50-100km daily rides and where to base myself during the trip. I'm aware of some tour operators which specialise in this kind of thing for groups, but to be honest I prefer solus riding, at my own pace. I'd also appreciate any recommendations on where to hire a GPS unit from.

I don't have any experience with biking through the French Riviera, but Nice is a beautiful city that would serve as a great home base while you're on your travels. The city is small - everything seems to be within walking distance - and you can have some nice relaxation time on the beach.
