The big bonus of staying at the Tryp Apolo is easy access to the buzzing nightlife of the up-and-coming Poble Sec district. On the area’s long, pedestrianised Blai Street there’s not a tourist trap in sight – just a long line of bars and restaurants plying tasty tapas to clued-up locals. Look out in particular for Bodega La Tieta and Koska Taverna, which are both excellent. Once you’ve munched your way through Poble Sec, you’re a short walk from the ever-rollocking Raval district and the Ramblas themselves. Plus, the hotel is right next to the Parallel metro stop, so making your way to clubs in other parts of the city is hassle-free.

I quite enjoyed my stay at this hotel. The rooms are clean and the bed was very comfortable. At first I was a little thrown off by the location, until I went for a walk and realized that it’s only a ten-minute walk to Plaza Colon and La Rambla. I also got to discover the charming streets of Poble Sec and its typical Catalan restaurants and bars. You are also right next to the metro stop that takes you all over the city (green line). Internet is not free in this hotel, they actually charge you 17€ a day, which is very over priced. Other than that, I would recommend this hotel and opt for disconnecting from the virtual world for a few days.

It was nice to be in one of Barcelona’s less mainstream neighborhoods, Poble Sec, which is equally as lively with plenty of rustic bars and trendy restaurants, yet not as crowded as the city center. Ferran Adria’s new restaurant, Tickets, is actually in this neighborhood (you can only reserve online and they’re totally booked up to three months in advance). Even though the hotel’s not in the city center it’s a close walk to La Rambla, the downtown core and the green metro line is two seconds from the building, which can take you to Gracia or the Eixample area. This is a large hotel, with plenty of natural light in the lobby and decent sized rooms with friendly service. There are a few computers available in the lobby but if you want to log onto wi-fi with your laptop, it’s 17 Euros a day! Check out the Menu Del Dia between 1pm-4pm in the Cafeteria, it’s a pretty good deal and the food is fresh.
