Well, you can't even find this place on Google maps, but the closest big city is Irbid and you can figure it out from there. Umm Qais is also known as Gadara, one of the Decapolis cities. Though the city was abandoned in 747 due to an earthquake, one can still see remains of the Decumanus Maximus(the main Roman road), the Octagonal Church and a theater made of black basalt. Umm Qais is located in the northwest corner of Jordan, and its perch on the hillside affords spectacular views of the Golan Heights in Syria, the Sea of Galilee, and the Jordan Valley. Though not as well preserved as Jerash, Umm Qais is well worth a stop off of the beaten path to experience the views, and marvel at Roman ingenuity.
