I found this pretty interesting as I have come across nothing like it in Europe and set myself a fun (to me) challenge. How far could I travel from my hotel before I had to surface. Managed to get a fair way across the city centre.

I love the idea of underground shops, restaurants and passageways, especially since we visited in the dead of winter and the city would have been nearly impossible if confined to the above ground streets. There is something unexpected around every corner of the system. Well worth taking the time to explore.Recommended for:

Montreal can get really chilly during the winter, so the city planners were brilliant at building an underground city beneath the city. Thus, this underground-type mall allows residents to walk, shop, and eat, and not worry about walking through the frigid cold.Recommended for:

The underground city is one continuous mall that spans 7 metro stations in the downtown area. Famous for its endless shops and boutiques and a sanctuary for those who seek to escape the unforgiving summer heat or the bitterness of winter, the underground city is an interesting way to get around the downtown area, great for grabbing some good eats and window shopping some famous stores. The excellent signs present helpful hints at each of the frequent exits onto main streets of Montreal and metro stations.Recommended for:

This is what makes Montreal doable in the dead of winter. Great idea. I've only explored a fraction of the nearly 20 miles of passages, but it's certainly memorable and not just because it always features in Quebecois films.Recommended for:

The underground city in Montreal is similar to the one in Toronto, but with less shops. However, the access from the underground city to popular parts of Montreal is still a nice benefit to have during winter and is the best way to get around downtown.Recommended for:

I was in love and absolutely amazed at how large this underground city was! The boutique clothing stores carried such amazing, unique items, great pieces for home and delicious varieties of food! I'm a bit envious that we don't have this here in NY lol

Would you like to leave your hotel, shop, go to the cinema, get your hair cut and do groceries without ever seeing the light of day?
I bet you would if it's -20 outside during a frosty Montreal winter!
The underground city is where downtowners live their lives during the coldest months, and with nearly 18km of combined amenities and shopping underground, it's easy to do everything you need to do without needing to go outside.

This is a nice way to spend some time when the weather is not great. You can shop, eat or just walk around people watching for hours. Make sure you get a map if you do have a destination in mind as it can be confusing.
