This is a great location for theater – right across from the Curran Theater & A.C.T. It’s a very small hotel with a tiny lobby, basically just big enough for the front desk. It’s pretty comfortable, but not in any way plush – the bedding has that cheap-hotel-room feel to it, and some of the paint could use some work. It looks a little dirty, but I think it’s more that it’s gotten a little bruised and battered over the years, and is actually well-cleaned. So just fine for a great price and a great location, and friendly staff. Plus you can get in line early for ramen at Katana-Ya! Parking is $25 per 24 hour period about a block and a half away.

The best thing about the Union Square Plaza Hotel is its location. It sits right across the street from the A.C.T. and the Curran Theatre (the “official home of Broadway in San Francisco”). There are a number of really great restaurants surrounding it, and Union Square and the big mall—the Westfield San Francisco Centre—are a few minutes away. In other words, you won’t need to commute or walk far to see the best of downtown San Francisco. If you should decide to travel to other neighborhoods, the Powell Street BART and Muni Metro Station is a few blocks away.

As for the property, it is clean and nice enough for a comfortable stay. The golden lobby doesn’t really say anything except “old,” however the rooms are much more sunny and comfortable. Wi-Fi is free, and while rooms don’t have coffeemakers, you can get free tea and coffee in the lobby. In any case, there are probably about five Starbucks in the near vicinity. Service was acceptable, though they always seem short on staff and resources. There was a time when the lobby wasn’t even staffed for a period of time. In any case, they are still friendly and professional.

    19. Union Square Plaza Hotel is located in the heart of downtown, and as the name suggests, is a block and a half from Union Square, close to a variety of big name stores, small boutiques, and eateries. The lobby is sparse with just the front desk, and feels slightly retro with all the gold coloring, and mirrored walls. The rooms are pretty basic and the décor/ wallpaper is slightly old. If you’re looking for a budget-friendly hotel that’s in the middle of it all, and you’re ok with an older hotel that’s basic, but convenient, Union Plaza is a great option. It’s clean, well-maintained, and spacious. Free Wi-Fi is also available (a sign in the lobby says that it’s $5, but we were informed that it was, in fact, free). It’s also directly across the street from both the Curran Theatre and the American Conservatory Theatre, and right near two cable car lines.

My cousin and I stayed here for the weekend. We needed to be near Union Square and we were about a block away. This hotel is next door to Katana-Ya. The amenities are non-existent but what you get is an affordable place to stay. There's one elevator and a set of stairs. The windows are single-pane so we could hear the Occupy SF protesters down the street. The paint is peeling, the furniture is old, but the room is clean and for about $88/night I wasn't complaining. There's a tub inside the bathroom, but the sink is in the room. It needs a major update. Our window overlooked the alley behind the hotel and we could see a homeless person had made a make-shift shelter amongst the trashcans. We spent 3 nights here and was close to the BART, MUNI, Union Square, and tons of food options. There are plenty of convenience stores around: Walgreens, 7-11, CVS. Also down the street is the Macy's, Apple Store, and Niketown. It's close to Chinatown and Little Italy as well. Extra star because we were able to check in early, but they will hold your luggage for you if you can't check in until your room is ready.

The staff was very kind and nice. Easy access to the downtown. But, during the night, you may hear very noisy sound.
