I work a few blocks away and I often go to the square with my lunch to eat and enjoy the weather- they offer chairs and tables as well as the large steps for seating. They put an ice skating rink in the winter and a giant tree; very festive. A fun place to go to relax as well as do some shopping or fine dining in the area.Recommended for:Local Culture

This was a nice stop in touring the city. There a ton of shops in this vicinity. Our favorite was an art gallery that has one of our favorite artists in it.

Uniion Square is a world class destination! It is a Square in the center of downtown, that is surrounded by some of the best shops, hotels, and restaurants San Francisco has to offer... St Francis Hotel, Saks Fifth Avenue, Tiffany's. It is an architectural phenomenon with centers leading up in a cascading order people use to sit, people watch, relax, and simply enjoy life! There is a wonderful cosmopolitan cafe and pastry shop at the top Empoio Rolli, and it is excellent! There is also a booth to buy half price tickets for a grand performance that night, there are many theaters in San Francisco. There is the Beautiful Dewey Monument, also known as the Naval Monument, dedicated by Roosevelt. Many days will have art exhibitions, in the winter the center of Union Square turns into an ice skating rink. The SF cable cars go right by Union Square, so it is a great travel point and meeting place. Whatever brings you to Union Square you are sure to appreciate the uniqueness and beauty of this destination!

This area of SF is the one with the closest ties to the rest of the world. Here is where you'll find brand name outlets and huge buildings full of suit-wearing employees of international companies. You'll also find some of the city's most interesting restaurants (Gitane, Farallon, Cafe Claude) and prettiest urban square (Union Square itself boasts ice skating in Winter and lots of live music year-round). It'd be easy to dismiss Union Square as too commercial and touristy, but it's just too pretty to ignore.

Union Square is tourist heaven for those from out of town, but for those around here, it's where you go for a date or to price check the latest and greatest, whether that be Neiman Marcus or Macy's. In the winter, go for the ice skating, and in the summer, people watch. Have fun!

The Union Square shopping area features numerous high end shopping opportunities from large department stores to small boutique shops. The Christmas displays are fantastic.Recommended for:Luxury Travelers
