For shopping, nightlife, great eats and drinks, and live entertainment, CityWalk is the place to go in Universal City. Even if you don't go into Universal Studios park, this is a fun place to go. I love the Hard Rock Cafe, but they have tons of other restaurants - even a Tommy's Burgers, Subway, and Starbucks, among other more unique locations. This simulated city block is chock full of people browsing - which means lots of crowds. Music plays overhead, and live entertainment is common, so this is not a quiet place by any means. But it's a fantastic place to get together for drinks, and my absolute favorite place is the piano lounge, Howl At the Moon. (See my passport for my review.)Recommended for:

Great place to show friends and family from out of town. Plenty of restaurants are available. There's an AMC Theatre with IMAX, real IMAX, I might add. You can do indoor skydiving at iFly. On occasion, you can also find a concert at the 5 Towers.

Not for the faint of heart. This place has so many tourists (and Angelenos) milling around, that it's hard not to feel a little claustrophobic. There are a lot of kitchy stores and some so-so restaurants, as well as a few attractions like the mock skydiving booth. I wasn't a fan the first time I came here, and haven't been back since.Recommended for:

If you want to get a little slice of Universal Studios without paying the hefty entrance fee to get in the park the head off to the Universal Citywalk. If you have children the I would highly suggest going there is enough to keep them busy and the parents will get a kick of checking out the sites and sounds. There is also a pretty good selection of restaurants there so you will get a nice variety of food.Recommended for:

Universal City Walk. With so many restaurant options (Hard Rock Cafe, Samba Brazilian, Tony Romas, Gordon Biersch, and more!), indoor skydiving at i-fly, bowling and arcade at Jillians, The Gibson Amphitheater, and shops to peruse, you might never make it to Universal Studios!

I would like this place more but they just charge so much for parking. It's worth visiting if you'd like to experience food and entertainment after hanging out at Universal Studios. As a local I just don't think it's worth it to pay the parking fee. Otherwise I would be there more often. I like the layout of the place and the excitement.

Universal's CityWalk is a nice place to spend an evening, but it resembles more of an outdoor mall than anything a big amusement park might create. It's not as pretty as Downtown Disney, but it satisfies if you're just looking for stuff to do.

Loud, crowded and touristy, this isn't my favorite spot in LA. But it is a good place to hang out and grab a quick drink or bite to eat before heading in to the Gibson Amphitheater.

Fun just to while away some time. They have some nightlife (dinner, dancing, strolling amidst the lights and occasional sidewalk acts). You might even spot recording artists just hanging out with their kids. The best part is that you can walk through anytime of day and it'll still be a good jaunt through Citywalk -- whether before or after the theme park, or even just an evening hangout.

I try to never ever go here if I can help it. A convenient place if you are a tourist visiting Universal Studios, but I'm not sure why else you would go here otherwise (unless you want to see something in 3D IMAX or a show at the Gibson Ampitheater). The parking costs are ridiculous, but if you park at the subway station at the bottom of the hill, there is a free shuttle you can take up the the studios and Citywalk.
