Whether you hike or hitch a cable car, the view from Untersberg, the biggest mountain in Salzburg's direct surroundings, is worth the trip.

biggest mountain closest to Salzburg. You can take a cable car up and get stunning views over Salzburg and the surrounding. There is also a nice but strenuous hike up (between 2 and 3 hours one way)

Description:

Untersberg is a popular mountain massif that is located between the Austrian city of Salzberg and Germany's Berchtesgaden. The mountain is convenient to access by car or bus; the city of Salzberg runs a bus there every 15 minutes during the week. Once there, you can reach the summit by cable car or any of a number of scenic trails. Those interested in history and legend can appreciate that, according to legend, Frederick Barbarossa, one of the emperors of the Holy Roman Empire, is buried within the mountain and protected by dwarfs.
