To some tourists, Upstalsboom may seem out of the way. True, it's a bit of a trek to get to some of the city's most well-known attractions such as the Brandenburg Gate, Bundestag and Tiergarten. But it's in the heart of an up-and-coming Berlin neighborhood full of great restaurants, pubs, clubs and the East Side gallery. The no-frills hotel only offers wi-fi in the lobby and breakfast in the morning. Staff were friendly and helpful to me, and knowledgeable about the area. The hotel also has a small but well-equipped exercise room and Scandinavian-style sauna. I'd definitely recommend it to travelers looking to see a side of Berlin slightly off the beaten tourist bath and receive an affordable and comfortable stay.

An elegant and quiet hotel located just off of Warshauerstr, on the Eastern side of Berlin, it's a lovely place to explore a really interesting neighborhood. The rooms are warm, comfortable, and bright, and the hotel also has a good breakfast, included in the price. It's location is really excellent because Friedrichshain is a great neighborhood to explore in Berlin, it's far from tourist hell, and it's on a nice, quiet street where you can relax, but close to a lot of Berlin clubs as well as the East Side Gallery and the river Spree.

Upstalboom is one to remember as a great spot for an enjoyable stay in east Berlin. The street it's on is mostly residential, so it's peaceful and relaxing despite the fact Warschauer Strasse is directly behind it. The only thing that irked me was that WiFi is only available in the lobby area, so if you want to browse you have to hang out there. There's great night life on your doorstep too, with plenty of young people giving the area a feel-good vibe. Although the hotel's breakfast is varied and tasty, if you've had a few too many the night before there's a traditional Berlin lunch spot called Domka (don't confuse it for a butchers, despite the appearance) on Warschauer Strasse, where you can get something a bit more hearty to wake you up.

Friedrichshain has a reputation as a bit of a hippy/artist area full of late night clubbers, so quality hotels in the area are few and far between (I can only think of the Michelberger as one worthy of mentioning) but Upstalsboom--situated just off Warschauer Strasse in the middle of the district--manages to buck the trend without breaking the bank.

Rooms are clean and quiet and directly opposite a little park with a play area and football pitch so it's a good spot for anyone traveling with kids. The surrounding area is fantastic to explore. Simon Dach Strasse is two minutes away and is always alive with shisha bars, cafes, clubs and indie shops. Turn left out of the hotel and cross the road and there's a little restaurant called Pizza Vira. I would happily pay three times the amount they charge and still come back for more of their cheap, quality Italian cuisine. As for the hotel, it ticks all the right boxes for a mid-price stay so close to the city center (trams and the S/U-Bahn are all a few minutes away by foot). Staff are really friendly (seemingly genuinely so) and the rooftop terrace is a very relaxing spot to hang out with a cheap beer from the mini bar. All in all a great spot for those looking to explore a different side of Berlin.
My tip: if you're there on a weekend, walk 5 minutes to the Boxhagener Strasse flea market. You won't leave empty handed.

Upstalsboom is located in Friedrichshain, the part of Berlin that never sleeps. With a huge variety of bars, clubs and small stores with original and unique products, the area is currently one of the most interesting places to see in Berlin. Despite the hustle and bustle outside, the hotel is still very quiet and relaxing. Rooms are not really what I would call stunning but they do offer everything that is necessary: basic but very comfortable. The breakfast was very satisfying and the staff members polite and approachable. Would recommend it to anyone looking to experience the east side of Berlin.
