    Puerta del Sol

0.24 mi from Urban Hotel Madrid

    100 reviews

Puerta del Sol is named for a longtime medieval gate with the sun carved into it. It's a Madrid hub for transportation, political demonstrations, tourists, and of course pickpockets. It's not a particularly attractive place as it's mostly a cement filled space without benches or trees. A few interesting things include the statue of King Charles III, the Bear Pawing ...

The Museo Thyssen is a random collection of artwork from throughout the ages that was collected by a wealthy family. It doesn't have much of a unifying theme but is instead a good lesson is art history. I did see one of the most beautiful Monet paintings of a sunset there.

A quaint plaza in the heart of Madrid. During the summer it has lots of terrazas to have lunch or dinner. Don't forget to watch your bags (i.e. hold them in your lap), however, due to the many pickpockets.

A great area of town that has a bad reputation for having pickpockets...but really shouldn't. I never once felt as if I had to worry about anything when I was here. I loved the fact that I could enjoy walking around the city at any time of the day or night and see things to do. This is a great, ...

I don't know the significance of this building, honestly, but I walked past it three or four times during my week in Madrid and took a selfie in front of it on a cloudy day. The gilded statuary and prominent location are what catch the eye.

The inside of this building is fantastic 'baroque' design and worth the visit to see it. Restaurant on top is VERY chic, molecular cuisine and the exec chef has 2 Michelin stars. Also outdoor on the terrace has spectacular views. Expensive, so if you're thinking about price don't even go here. But the food and atmosphere is worth it if ...

All roads in Spain lead to Km. 0. At least 30 other countries have a Km. 0. The most famous is the Km. 0 in Rome, the Milliarium Aureum, and point of "all roads lead to Rome." Madrid's Km. 0 is in the lively Puerto del Sol, Spain's answer to NYC's Times Square. It's hippitude was secured with the film ...

For over 300 years Spain was the imperial power that colonized and rules much of the Western Hemisphere. This museum has a very large collection of different pieces brought back by the conquistadors and later colonizers of the Americas. They have many beautiful pieces from the native cultures, and a spectacular collection of gold objects from Colombia that is as ...

Located across from the Royal Palace, this 1.60-hectare garden is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Madrid. The gardens were planned by José Bonaparte, who wanted the gardens to highlight the Palacio and the Teatro Real. The Gardens have been designed in geometrical shapes in order to provide air and enhance the façade of the Royal Palace. Moreover, ...

My husband took me here as one of my Christmas presents. I was blown away. It's an old Arab bath that has been renovated. It was so relaxing and beautiful. There was 3 warm baths, a hot bath, a Turkish steam bath, and a cold bath for after the Turkish bath. First you go in and get into your bathing ...

Chill, dim-lit bar (note that I'm talking about the bar rather than the attached restaurant) with intimate tables and music that will hardly strike distaste with the general populace. It's a good place to have cocktails if you're waiting for La Barraca (opposite side of the street) to open. Service is casual, friendly, and quick. You're pretty safe with the ...

Sandeman's New Europe walking tours are FREE. Yes free! However, your tour guide does ask for tips. That's how they get paid. So if you think your guide deserves a small or large tip at the end of a 3 hour tour, feel free to give them some money. Otherwise they might starve. No, really. Our tour guide was Mark ...
