There are few places in China one could conscionably call “eco friendly”. Happily, the URBN Hotel, in downtown Shanghai is one of them. Even the hotel’s location is in line with its understated appeal—the natural wood-fronted structure is on a relatively quiet street that is conveniently close to the city center, without being loud or surrounded by high rises (a hard thing to accomplish in a city of 23 million people). There is a large outdoor dining space that is shielded from the street by bamboo where guests can enjoy a relaxing breakfast. Non-hotel guests are also able to enjoy a meal at Downstairs, URBN’s casual fine-dining establishment or a drink at one of the hotel’s two low-key watering holes. One drawback is that extra amenities such as gym facilities are not located on-site, though guests have access to a well-equipped gym nearby.

A very nice hotel inside a courtyard on central Jiaozhou Road, within walking distance of Jing'an Temple and line 2 and 7 on the metro. The rooms are comfortable, service is good and the little extra things make this a very good hotel in central Shanghai (i.e. the backwall of the reception which is made from old suitcases). The only drawback is that Jiaozhou Road tends to get very busy in the morning rush hour, making it hard to get a taxi.

Very cool boutique hotel set in the heart of Jing’An district, pretty much directly downtown. Relaxing space with a very welcoming staff, there are less then 30 rooms in the entire hotel so it’s a very personalized stay. The entire hotel and restaurants were constructed using 100% locally sourced or recycled materials and it really adds something special to the experience. Urbn is also the first carbon neutral hotel in China, which is something I really appreciate coming from the Northwest. Rooms are also very cool! There is not actual furniture, everything is built into the room, couches and beds come out of the floor and walls with really clean lines and the entire space is very design driven and beautiful. Make sure to dine in house at Downstairs by David Laris, really nice wine selection and a nice rustic menu with the best truffle mac ‘n cheese… possibly ever.

URBN has the distinction of being China’s first carbon neutral hotel. First a warehouse, then a post office, now a hotel URBN still retains much of it’s charm from it’s previous lives. Since all the materials that go into building the hotel are locally sourced, they have been able to reduce their carbon footprint since they don’t have to import fancy toilets or sinks. When you enter URBN from the street you really feel like you are stepping into an urban oasis. Plaques on the walls indicate the materials (slate, brick, wood) and where they are from (Suzhou, Shanghai etc) and the design is minimalist. The restaurant on the first floor is open, with a chalkboard noting the specials. The rooms at URBN are unique in that they have no furniture; It’s all incorporated into the design of the room. Very cool indeed. URBN is a great choice for the eco conscious or those looking to go green without sacrificing on service. Upon check-in guests are asked if they want to offset the cost of their trip by purchasing a tree in Mongolia. For 25RMB a pop you can make a difference without going much out of you way. All the water from the restaurant and bar is filtered before leaving the premises and URBN asks guests before washing their towels or linens. All the toiletries are either organic or all natural- meaning your tresses get the green treatment as well. With its location in Jing’an this first mover on the boutique hotel market is an excellent choice to experience Shanghai if you’re flying solo or with a companion.
