At the Visitors Center, catch a few short films about Congress, visit the Exhibition Hall with an audio tour on your cell phone, and sign up for a tour of the Capitol building. If you request visitors passes from the offices of a Representative or Senator, it's fascinating to watch debate in the House or Senate chambers.

OK, this is not my favorite museum. Best to go when they are having a special demonstration. But I do like the food! While they have your standard cafeteria fare, they also feature foods eaten by native peoples of this Hemisphere. Get your children to try the fry bread!

This pool sits right in front of the Capitol Building. We visited at night and the Capitol looked lovely reflecting off the waters of the pool. It's a great place to sit and relax.

If your kids like creepy-crawly things, this is the place for you. The museum has millions of insect specimens. Happily, they aren't all on display! The huge African bull elephant in the lobby draws everyone in. Maybe you can get in a few words about the environment and ecology while you are there.

Does everyone have a kid who wants to be an astronaut? This is where dreams are made. The Spirit of St. Louis, space capsules, flight simulators … It's no wonder this is a first stop for visitors from all over the world. For the absolutely exhausted, I'd try chilling with an IMAX movie or a planetarium show.

The Library of Congress is indeed impressive. It supposedly contains all books, articles, records, and pretty much everything ever printed in US history and also tons of foreign literature. However, unless you are there to do research, there really isn't much to do except to just walk through. We visited the Library of Congress and ended up just spending less ...

I love the “family guides” that describe the art in various galleries, and then provide questions and little projects for those aged 6 and up. There is also an audio tour designed for children. Edgar Degas' Little Dancer Aged Fourteen is a favorite with young ballerinas.

This is my favorite Smithsonian museum since there is something for everyone. Whether it's for Abraham Lincoln's top hat or Miss Piggy, your family will remember this place. The museum shops are fun, too. I like the personalized dog tags that are made while you wait at their military-themed store.

So worth the price! This museum has some of the most engaging exhibits I have ever seen. I really like how they constantly change their exhibits. There are usually specials like buy one adult ticket and up to 10 children get in free, so take advantage of that!

After you make the obligatory stop to see the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, head downstairs to the Public Vaults. Kids like the exhibition's interactive displays and audio and video recordings.

This cherished old, fresh produce and flower market is a Capitol Hill institution. Fear not, there are still sweets to be had! On many weekends, there are craft vendors out front.
