Centrale Montemartini

106 Via Ostiense, Rome 00154 Italy
One of Rome's coolest hidden gems, Centrale Montemartini is a 1912 power plant that's been turned into an exhibition space for "overflow" from the Capitoline Museums collection, including some 400 ancient Roman statues. The contrast between the ancient artwork and the plant's modern machinery is nothing short of striking. Not to mention that the sheer size of the space (with its super-tall ceilings and huge galleries), plus the complete lack of crowds, means that wandering around is a whole lot more pleasant, and less overwhelming, than in the overstuffed halls of, say, the Vatican museums.
