Palomar Observatory

35899 Canfield Rd, Palomar Mountain, CA, United States
Becky Mahan's rating:
Quite frankly, despite the observatory's historical significance and importance in space research, it is boring to visit. It is surrounded by beautiful, quiet mountain wilderness and offers a nice break from your nearby hikes, but there is not much to do. The observatory itself only allows you to climb stairs and view the telescope through a giant window. An old electronic device offers computer text write-ups about the various telescopes that have been used and the researchers who used them; the operating system looks like MS-DOS. A short ways away from the observatory is the tiny museum, which is fascinating for space nerds to walk around and read the brightly illustrated displays about the solar system and our technology, but otherwise lacking in any interactive function. But, since it's free, if you are on Palomar Mountain anyway, it's worth a visit. Just don't go out of your way to see it.
