I actually planned on going to an Austrian pub, but I accidentally walked into the wrong restaurant (the pub was two doors down). It turned out to be a great mistake. Maier's served excellent food. It's Michelin-starred and is a little walk away from the Old Town. I had the aubergine soup...more
Hohensalzburg Fortress is the fortress overlooking the town of Salzburg. You can access the fortress by hike or by the funicular. Inside, you'll get a tour of the fortress but the main attraction is the view you get of the city.
The Salzach River cuts across the small town of Salzburg. When the weather is bright and sunny, it's an ideal place to sit by the banks and lounge around with Old Town and the alpine scenery surrounding you.

Friedhof St. Peter (St. Peter's Cemetery) is in Old Town and nestled against the Monschberg mountain. It is the oldest cemetery in Salzburg and is also one of the loveliest cemeteries I've seen around the city.
Cafe Fingerlos is a popular cafe in Salzburg. If possible, go in the morning before the locals head off to work. It's a terrific place for people watching. Plus, the coffee and breakfast food is fresh and delicious.
Barenwirt is an excellent restaurant (and introduction) to Austrian cuisine. I had the most decadent schnitzel ever. Schnitzel is a classic dish in this region, but Barenwirt tops it by adding pork meat, cheese, ham, mushrooms, and loads it up with fried batter. It tasted amazing! In addition, the...more
