A wonderful country that seems to be on the verge of greatness. Friendly people, excellent food, and host to a number of world-class sights, including: the rock hewn churches of Lalibela and Simien Mountain National Park. To me, the real highlight of Ethiopia was the people. Friendly, colorful,...more
The hike out to Ashetan Maryam was one of my favorite experiences on our trip through northern Ethiopia. The hike is relatively short (less than 2 hours) and takes you from the center of town through a quaint village and up to a lovely monastery the offers stunning views from its 3,150 m perch. Lovely modern property with stunning views of the surrounding hillside. After a long day of sightseeing, we really looked forward to a few hours sitting on the terrace each day. A great place to relax. The food and staff are great. Rooms are basic but nice and most seem to have private balconies. Very...more
My favorite property from our stay in Ethiopia. Bahar Dar itself doesn't have much to offer but Kurifu provides a nice lakeside retreat complete with pool and spa. Rooms come with an outdoor fireplace and large outdoor day bed. The showers are hot and most rates seem to include a lot of extras --...more

Lovely building set in the midst of a reflecting pool (which is empty except at festival times). Doesn't take long to see but well worth a visit. The trees and birds here are almost as much of an attraction as the sight itself.
The external facade of this church is quite simple but the paintings on the inside are among the best we saw in Ethiopia. Truly stunning. The winged cherubs will immediately grab your attention but this is the one place where it really does make sense to have your guide walk you through some of the...more
