Fort Point is an old coastal defense site that's now right under the Golden Gate Bridge. While it formerly protected the opening to the bay, it's now a tourist vantage point for the area. It can get chilly so bring a jacket.
I've been to Golden Gate Park mostly for running events. There's a mix of roads and trails and it can get pretty challenging, such as spiraling, and back down, Strawberry Hill. There's also a flat running track, but what fun is that?
I stayed near Japantown on a couple of trips and liked to walk over for lunch at one of the many Japanese restaurants. The surrounding areas aren't so good, but this plaza is clean and safe. I've never had a problem while in Japantown.
I love Mel's Drive-In, although it's not a drive in at all. The original restaurant was had carhop service, but that restaurant is gone. This is just good American diner food. I tend to go to the one on Mission since it's close to the other stuff I'm doing....more
A ferry takes you out to The Rock, where you can wander around the grounds or take the tour inside. Make reservations for the ferry because the line can get long and you have an assigned ferry time.
