I love this city and can't wait to go back. With the geography of the region, the city is built out instead of up, so while there is a lot of sprawl there are no skyscrapers to block a good view. From the center of the city, the acropolis is visible above....more
If you visit the Acropolis, you should really consider visiting this museum as well. I don't think I really had a sense of the rich history or what the Acropolis would have been like until I saw the museum. Great views of the Acropolis just up the hill and amazing exhibits. It really adds...more
Simply an amazing building with so much history, from being constructed, defaced, and even used to store ammunition. The new museum nearby is also a must see that really puts the Parthenon in context, although you will have to go to London to find some of the marbles....more
Absolutely breathtaking. Climbing the steps to the acropolis feels like stepping through history. It is a bit of a hike, so choose good weather and sturdy shoes but the view of Athens from the top is unparalleled.
I would recommend visiting on a day when there isn't a protest, but those seem few and far between lately. If you do go, be sure to find out when the guards change their station. Between the uniforms and their march, I thought the changing of the guards in Athens was better than at Buckingham...more
