Hi Alex -- I stayed at this hostel years ago, and liked it. It's outside the park, but not by much. Cool hostel vibe if that's what you want, or private tent cabins and regular cabins if you're feeling less social.
My favorite place to stay in Calistoga. Love the cottages, the pool, the croquet, and the loaner bikes. Easy walk to restaurants in downtown, but a few blocks removed, so it feels more tranquil.
San Francisco visitors and locals both love to head to Napa and Sonoma for wine tasting. Even better is to combine vineyard visits with the outdoors and a little physical activity.
Gears and Grapes takes you in a small group, via van, to the wine country. There, you hop on a bike they provide, go wine tasting at a couple wineries. Then stop for gourmet lunch somewhere beautiful. Then tour a couple more wineries. Then shuttle back to SF, so you can stay safe and DUI-free.
The guides are all licensed sommeliers, so you have your own wine expert with you for the whole trip.
