I studied at Otago University for a semester, so I lived in Dunedin for 5 months. It's a fantastic place to live or visit. Sandfly Bay is a beautiful beach, but probably not one you would lay around on. The reason is the abundance of sea lions, which are huge and awesome but a little scary. The thing to do here is walk down to the end of the beach (if you can get past the sea lions) and go into the penguin hide around dusk. Then...more
When I lived in Dunedin, I came to Velvet Burger too often for my own good. The burgers are excellent. I especially love the Velvet Burger, which is a venison burger. But my favorite thing to eat here was skinny fries with garlic aioli. Irresistible!
The Otago Museum is right across the street from the University of Otago library. Entry is by donation. It's a nice little museum. The room of preserved animals in the attic was a little creepy since it was deserted.
