I had expected not to like Oahu - I had heard that it was the most crowded and touristy of the islands. But I really loved it. We stayed in Lanikai - on the far side of the island away from the bustle of Honolulu. It was magical. One of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen....more
One of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. Turquoise water, powdery sand and islands dotting the horizon. It's on the windward side, so it can be windier and wetter than other beaches. But when the weather is good it's tough to beat!...more
Amazing place. The location is absolutely unbelievable - 200 feet from the best beach on Oahu. The house itself is very nice, with nice bedrooms. The pool area is not great and needs some work, but you won't want to hang out at the pool when you are steps from Lanikai Beach....more
Several friends recommended Alan Wong's to me, so we ended up coming here on our last night. Really glad we did. Good walking shoes are strongly recommended, and plan 1.5 - 2 hours for the round trip (plus whatever time you plan to spend swimming at the falls....more
Oahu's north shore is famous for its roadside shrimp trucks. Romy's is known to be one of the best. We had the garlic shrimp that was super garlicky and good, and fried shrimp (wrapped like egg rolls). You sit at outdoor picnic tables.
Some of the best snorkeling in Oahu can be found in Hanauma Bay, a former volcanic crater and now a teeming reef. The state built a $30MM visitors center here, where you can learn about the bay and the sealife. The key draw is the snorkeling. We saw tons of big, brightly colored fish and a couple of...more
