USS Hornet Museum

USS Hornet, Alameda, CA
12 reviews

Great attraction featuring WWII, Vietnam, Korea and NASA Apollo history. You get to explore a good portion of the ship plus they have docents who actually served on the ship. Allow a minimum of 2 hours for a very basic visit. They also offer memberships and special events. Oh, the views of SF are lovely too!!

Club Nautique Sailing and Powerboating School

0.87 mi from USS Hornet Museum

This is a rigorous sailing education. I was initially skeptical as it seemed a little bourgeois, but the instructors are top notch, and the standards for passing a class are rigorous: you can re-take a class if you fail, but no one get a pass unless they prove they mastered the material and can sail in the demanding condition of ...

    Ballena Isle Marina

0.87 mi from USS Hornet Museum

This is a nice marina. There are a lot of marinas on alameda island, but this one is located on the south side of the island, making it immediately available to the bay. Unlike the marinas in the oakland estuary, this means you are can sail freely immediately upon clearing the breakwater, which is pretty nice. There are not too ...

One of the coolest gyms I have ever been to... There are THREE soccer courts inside, a basketball court, a BAR, and a full gym... Even a full rock climbing wall and boulder. They do have a kids area, what does this gym NOT have?

To me this is as iconic a bridge as the Golden Gate. I love that I can catch glimpses of it from anywhere in the financial district. With the new LED light installation going on for the next two years maybe the bay Bridge will finally get a little bit of recognition.

Lake Merritt is a beautiful place in the middle of Oakland with a ton of things to see and do. You'll see joggers/walkers at all times of the day. I'm glad that there is free two hour parking along certain parts of the lake.

The Fox Theater is a great venue. It's a great looking building, I had a great view from my seat in the balcony and The Den (the lounge next door) is a great place to hang out if you arrive early for the show. Easy access via BART seals the deal.

Jack London Square is a great place for locals to meet and hang out with family and friends. In the last 5 years, it has undergone major reconstruction of its buildings and now appears more modern and clean. Watch a movie, check out the small shops and dine at one of the restaurants along the wharf. The farmer's market on ...

A great park for small kids (I think 2-8 years old) with many famous kids' stories like Alice in wonderland, the three little pigs and more. Admission is only 8$ per person and the kids have activities here for a full day.

Hipster-y bar next to the Fox Theater and the 19th Street BART exit. They have a selection of signature cocktails for $8. My favorite is the rye bourbon one with balsamic syrup and basil. The bar is pretty large and there are tables and booths both outside and inside.

If you're a college student or just really cheap like me, IKEA is the perfect place to buy your furniture. I've had the same $9 coffee table for the past eight years. IKEA also makes shopping for furniture fun. The only downside is that a lot of other people like to come here too, resulting in some crazy crowds.

An Art Deco stunner! When I lived in the East Bay, loved going to screenings of classic movies here, it's the full vintage experience...they do a spin game, an organist plays a few numbers, and they screen a short before the feature film. Their live performance line-up is impressive too.

Really cool company, makes some great vodka (Hanger One). You can visit the distillery here in Alameda and do some vodka tasting. Sweet. They also make an absinthe, which for some reason or another is legal again here in the U.S. Be sure to check out the rest of the abandoned U.S. Navy base as well. Lots of cool old ...
