It's known to the Hungarians as Szeppassszonyvolgy, the Valley of the Beautiful Woman. In this horseshoe shaped valley to the south of town you will find a clutch of wine cellars, which are built into the hillside and resemble adorable hobbit homes. These cellars offer the latest vintage of the region's famous wine. The most prized is Egri Bikaver (Eger bull's blood), a red wine that is a blend of 13 different grapes. The Turks believed that during the siege of Eger the Hungarians were mixing bull's blood into their wine for strength and bravery and so the name stuck.

You can tour the various wineries easily on foot. The proprietors will fill up your water bottle with wine for a Euro or two. Fortunately there's also a shuttle to get you to and from the center of town.
