The Vatican Museums contain incomparable collections of Egyptian, Etruscan, Greek, Roman and Early Christian artifacts, as well as frescoes by Michaelangelo and Raphael, priceless manuscripts and jewels. The highlight of course is a visit to the Sistine Chapel. It is recommended that visitors hire a guide when touring the museums so that highlights of the collections can be accented.

I absolutely loved the Vatican Museum. Although it was huge and required a lot of time to get through (especially with the huge crowds), it was definitely worth the time. In every room the ceilings are beautifully painted. There are a lot of really cool paintings and sculptures too. After seeing all the great things in the musuem first, seeing the Sistine Chapel at the end was a little underwhelming (still beautiful, but I wasn't as awe struck). Use the Roma Pass to skip the long line to buy tickets!

For a really exceptional visit to the Vatican Museum, forget queuing up outside for hours. There's a handful of tour operators which now have a 'special' (=$$$) relationship with the Holy See, which allows them to organise guided tours of the Vatican while it's closed to the general public. Among these are Italy's Best Home (http://www.italysbestrome.com/#menu-item-1302) and Dark Rome (http://www.darkrome.com). There's usually no more than 20-30 other people on the tour. Very special.

What a beautiful series of museums. I was literally in awe as I slowly stepped through this place, surrounded by great works of history. Paintings on ceilings appear like sculptures with their shadowy effects. Faces follow you as you move with a little help from perspective. You're as likely to get lost in the art as you are in the massive crowds.
The experience culminates with you silently standing inside the Sistine Chapel, gazing up at Michelangelo's timeless work. This is a moment one can truly remember forever.
Like in other places, beware of pickpockets. One person in our group had her wallet taken from inside her bag while we were in St. Peter's Basilica. The security guard told us that it also happened to three other people.

Huge HUGE museum of sculptures, paintings, tapestries, and even painted ceilings. The Sistine chapel is the obvious highlight here and it is at the end of the long walk through the expansive museum.

The Vatican Museum has the famous Sistine Chapel painted by Michelangelo, but it's a bit anticlimatic. As the mostly linear museum leads you toward the chapel, you see many amazing things that are just as wonderful. By the time you get to the chapel, you're slightly numbed to the experience. This is especially true if you've already been to St. Peter's Basilica, which I think is even more beautiful
So, don't rush to the chapel. Enjoy everything you see along the way.
Get there early. The lines can be very, very long.

I recently traveled to Rome with a few of my buddies. We decided to have a guided tour of the Vatican Museums by Overome. I'm not much of a history buff nor am I Catholic but our tour guide, Nicoletta, was very knowledgeable and professional! We arrived late for our appointment but she was patient and waited for us. The price of the tour was competitive but she gave us our money's worth. While on our tour, I noticed other tour groups of 30 to 40 people. I was relieved that our group consisted of about 15 people. The allowed us to gather around Nicoletta to see what she was explaining with great ease. We were very happy with our tour and with Overome! I highly recommend a guided tour from Overome!!!
