They say that anything grown in Chile can be found in Vega Central, and I believe it. The trick would be finding it, in the acres of stalls competing for your attention. This hodgepodge of a market is in a warehouse that seems to cover several square blocks. If your senses aren't already overwhelmed by the billions of produce stands, butcher shops, tables full of knock-off designer items, people selling their used shoes on blankets on the sidewalk - not to worry, there are slot machines to stimulate you. When shopping for produce, beware - quality (and price) vary a lot. Look closely or you may find yourself with some overripe fruit or wilting lettuce.

This is the most south american that Santiago can get. Cheap, beautiful, busy, authentic, come just to take a look or to get the ingredients for your next lunch. Must visit it during the morning, the earlier the better.

Description

It's easy to get hopelessly lost in this titanic farmer's market, but the good news is if you did, you could survive a long time. Anything that is grown in Chile is for sale here – the trick is finding exactly what you want, and the price you want, at one of the hundreds of stalls. If your eyes grow sore after staring at the brilliant rainbow of fruits and vegetables, fear not – wander a while and you'll find hundreds more stalls selling meats, grains, cereals, Tupperware, kitchen supplies, and used shoes.
