Biking is a great way to see the city, and the stations are located conveniently throughout the city. Just check for flat tires before you take a bike!

Velib is the French public bike system that allows you to rent a bike per hour just by using your credit card and for a few Euros. There are Velib stations all over the city and you can take a bike and return it anywhere else, which makes it really convenient if you want to quickly move from a point to another or just bike around the city to see its landmarks.

Though Paris' public transport bike system, a.k.a the Velib, is not unique (it has been starting to pop up in most large cities around the world), it is really one of the best ways to experience the city in warmer months. It is also quite a cheap alternative to most public transportation, and a great way to get your daily exercise after copious french meals. And you can rent and return them anywhere in the city!
However, a few words of advice:
* you will need a credit card with a chip (not one that you swipe) in order to rent the bikes
* yes, velibs are cheap, but a deposit of 150 Euros is taken off your card (just to make sure you return them), and, because this is France, can sometimes take some time to get refunded. So, just make sure you weren't counting on that 150 to survive.
* a seat turned to the back means there is something wrong with the bike
*you might want to steer clear (excuse the pun) of the city center and explore more remote areas on the bikes, because it can be quite dangerous with the heavy traffic. Visit the velib website for itinerary ideas and more info.

There are velib stations throughout Paris which makes picking up and returning the bikes very easy. Apparently both locals and tourists use these convenient mode of transportation, however, navigating on a bike through the busy streets of Paris could be daunting. Nevertheless, one of my best Paris memories, make that travel memories were of biking through the quiet streets of Paris in the middle of the night. Amazing!
The kiosks accept credit card but make sure it is one with the chip, or a Velib card (like a prepaid card) which could be purchased at any tourist info center.
City bike share/rentals are the best idea EVER! especially when both locals and tourist could enjoy this service.

A lovely way to go around Paris. If it's summer, for sure, you should rent a bike! They have so many velib stations all over Paris.
You need only a credit card. You pay 1 euro for a day pass or 5 euros for the week pass (plus how much you use). With this pass you can take a bike and return in any available station. Once, you have this pass and you take a bike you gonna pay how much you use. Until 30 minutes it's free, after it is 1 euro per hour. (rates from 2.011).
Make sure you return it correctly. A friend once didn't return it right, and they charged her 500 euros.

Velibs are a great way to see the city on a nice day. If you're american, use an American Express card to take out the bikes, since the US cards do not have the microchips in European cards. Amex cards work only because of a banking partnership between the Velib sponsored bank and American Express. The only issue with the entire velib process is that velib stations can get packed very quickly in popular neighborhoods so keep that in mind when you get to your destination.
