If you're want to stay near the beach, generally it's going to cost you a pretty penny. However, for about $170/night you can stay in this cozy little inn with the beach and plenty of great restaurants nearby.

Built in 1911, this ivy-covered Craftsman-house-turned-bed-and-continental-breakfast is on the National Register of Historic Places – with good reason. With a lobby and nine rooms all decorated with usable antiques, it has more the feel of an English country house and garden than a hotel property. While it’s high on history and charm, it’s not full on bathrooms, with some rooms sharing the two facilities down the hall. So if a private commode is top on your list, be sure to ask for one of the suites. Otherwise, go European and let the charm of the place outweigh the lack of conveniences. After all, it’s also only a short block from the beach. My favorite room is the Venice Pier Suite, with its hardwood floors, handmade quilt, whitewashed brick fireplace, partial ocean view, and many large windows that let in the sun and sea air.

Talk about a hidden gem! You’d never know this place was here unless someone told you. It’s off an alleyway super close to the beach, and the 1911 home is a historic landmark. They like to call it a “fine boarding establishment,” as opposed to an inn or bed and breakfast, though it certainly feels like it could be either. Indeed, a free breakfast buffet is served daily in the little nook off the main living room.

There’s only nine rooms total, and each has its own distinct layout and look. Europeans, in particular, seeks this place out, though Americans should be forewarned that all but two of the suites are shared-bathroom situations. I know it takes some getting used to, but this is a lovely spot for a getaway, so give it a chance. It’s the kind of place that writers and other creative types use for quiet retreats.
