This lovely little town between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara is often overlooked by tourists, but it's a fantastic place to learn to surf (L.A. surfers often drive here to go to C-Street Beach), shop the charming downtown Main Street, and stay and eat for way cheaper than you would in L.A. or San Diego. Ventura's also got a thriving local music and art scene, so check out the local weekly (Ventura County Reporter) and daily (Ventura County Star) for entertainment listings and art openings.

Very nice dog friendly beach. Main Street (downtown) has nice restaurants. I recommend Cafe Fiore. The Mission is one of the main attractions in the city.

Really like this town. I could see myself living here. It's a cozy beach town that has a lot to offer. It's part of the beautiful California coastline that I admire so much. Close enough to Los Angeles to get to it easily but far enough away where you can feel like you're on an island.

Ventura is a small seaside town. The coast is nice, but it gets nicer if you go further north.

Saw the Van's Warped Tour here. It was amazing seeing it in California right on the beach.

Description

Despite still officially being named “San Buenaventura,” this town has always gone by the nickname Ventura – and somehow that seems exactly appropriate for this beach town that doesn't take itself too seriously. The city is about an hour north of Los Angeles, and that proximity is obvious from the proliferate mall-going, Ray-Bay sporting teenagers around town. Its culture also takes cues from the chill surfer communities to its north, and has opened its arms to independent book shops, thrift stores and art studios. History buffs may want to check out the old San Buenaventura Mission, the 160-year-old Olivas Adobe (reportedly haunted), or the Native American artifact collection in the Museum of Ventura County.
