The history of Via della Conciliazione is certainly interesting. Built by Benito Mussolini in the mid-1930s, it serves as one of Rome's few large throghfares, able to bring in large masses of people (read: tourists) straight to Piazza San Pietro.
The original architect of the Piazza, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, intended that visitors get an eyeful as they left their crowded Medieval streets and entered the square. This effect, of course, has been diminished with the creation of Via della Conciliazione. And for this, it seems some of history is lost. However, the grandiosity and beauty of the street, particularly how it leads straight to the Vatican, is definitely a sight to see.Recommended for:
