Hilltop, overlooking Charlotte Amalie, there’s some Danish history here as the buildings date back to the 1800s. Originally, when Demark owned these islands, it was the residence of an early bank president. The main house, given the elevated name, The Mansion, faces the harbor. It is the best option and is preferred by honeymooners. It has nicer rattan furnishings but there are no antiques – anywhere.

The outbuildings which make up the six accommodations were for the help. One was the kitchen. More recently, that was where the owner’s son and wife lived and it is one of the more commodious. But like them all, the one bedroom is upstairs and is reached by climbing a spiral staircase. The least expensive unit, closest to the pool and sun terrace, has a spiral with steps so narrow – well, that is why guests here are normally young couples.
The proprietress, Madame Luisa, who can be overbearing, told me that one can walk down the steps to town in five minutes? Maybe, but coming back…Taxi, taxi!
