If you want modern urban atmosphere, you can't beat the W. One of the few hotels in New Orleans' downtown area to feature this style, the W is sandwiched by Harrah's Casino and Mother's Restaurant. (If you want to have a drink and people watch, check out "Whiskey Blue," a bar in the hotel's lobby.

If first impressions count for anything, the W in New Orleans' French Quarter is like a smooth-talking first date who gussied up for you but whose occasional slip-ups already reveal the many ways you’re going to be disappointed. The question is — will it be worth it?
First, the good points. The W, a stylish five-story boutique hotel tucked away on Chartres Street, is off Bienville Street in a busy and safe part of the French Quarter. As a tourist, you couldn’t find a better location in New Orleans. It’s a few blocks away from Jackson Square, the Riverwalk, and steps away from the streetcar on St. Charles Avenue should you want to venture away from the French Quarter and see the grand southern homes of the Garden District.
The woman at the front desk was friendly, as were the W’s staff in general during my brief visit. The clean and modern (if uninspired) second-floor room rang no alarm bells, and resort-style courtyard cabanas overlooking the pool area contrasted with the surrounding shabby-chic French Quarter buildings in an interesting way.
My visit coincided with some renovations, however, which meant that my first visual of the hotel was a dump truck in the front, and my first auditory impression was the screech of a chainsaw. In a darkened corner on the first-floor courtyard, the pool wasn’t much to look at, and although Wi-Fi is available for free in the lobby, it’s around $15 if you want it in your room. But when in New Orleans, how many people are going to hang out pool-side with their computers when there’s a crazy bohemian city filled with delicious food, stiff drinks, lovely music and eccentric locals just waiting to entertain you? Hopefully, not too many. (I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could.)
