When I traveled to NYC for work, the W New York was the ideal option because it was within walking distance to my client's office. Located in the heart of the financial district, this hotel is mostly occupied with business travel guests. The hotel is very well aware of that so the rooms are the smallest out of any W hotel I have ever stayed in. They are efficient and provide all the amenities important to a business traveler, but without a lot of space. The bar/lounge area is really open and gets really packed in evenings with lots of really social business men and women.Recommended for:Business Travelers

Most of my experience of this mid-town location of the W has been related to visits to the branch of Bliss located inside the hotel. The lobby bar is always hopping after-work and a lot of businesspeople come here for a bite to eat, or for a drink at the bar, before they board their commuter trains, departing from nearby Grand Central.
Update December 2012:
We spent one night in this hotel, due to a plumbing issue in our apartment and I was seriously unimpressed. The number one reason I chose the w had to do with their dog-friendly reputation and doggie room service, but when I tried to order something for my dog, I was told the hotel had discontinued the dog features and they could not even provide a water bowl for my little guy. Room service for people was crappy and expensive and the room was drab and not totally clean. We ordered robes , because there were none in the room, but the robes had disgusting shmutz on them, so we never put them on. The bed was pretty comfy. The shower curtain smelled like mildew and the bathtub was certainly not the marble dream described on the hotel website. I would never stay at this hotel again.

THE original W (the first one that started it all), the W on Lex was a great concept to convert an old and decrepit building into a trendy, chic, and cool hotel. The rooms here is reflective of the original building's layout which means VERY small space for the standard rooms. The lobby bar is the focal point as a trendy hang out place, just like all of its subsequent counterparts all over the way today.Recommended for:Trendsters

In general a w fan. So so on this hotel. Even after a double upgrade my room was smaller than the other Ws in town. No coffee machines in room which is a pain for late night working sessions. It was pouring in NYC and every time I needed an umbrella "sorry your too late". No restaurant in hotel except breakfast. Nothing to write home about. But a pleasant stay overall.

Don't love the W Hotels in general. Too dark. We had a particularly bad experience at this one, with lots of noisy housekeepers & workers in the hallway. The management was responsive, and the situation did improve, but still don't love the W.

I love this hotel. Great location in Midtown and easily accessible to the subway. The rooms aren't very large but very modern with a cool decor and amenities. I had a suite for my stay so got to experience a room with a jacuzzi tub. They also have a cool bar in the hotel

I know NY is tight on space but my very expensive room was as big as a closet. It's also wasn't really around anywhere I was hanging out. It wasn't terrible; it is a W. It just isn't as awesome as many of the other W's.

For a city that has very little room, the W hotel provides very spacious accommodations.
It's everything that you'd expect from a W anywhere, except it's in New York! It's got the ambiance, the cool people, and wheatgrass growing in a cement bench!
Ok all the trendiness aside, the rooms are nice and roomy. The shower and bathrooms are immaculate. It's a nice room to just relax after a busy day of walking around the city that never sleeps.
You'll still hear the street traffic even if you're on a higher floor, but it's a lot less noticeable than other hotels that I've stayed at in New York.
I'd definitely recommend the W and I'd definitely stay again.
