There are so many Hawaiian legends around this place. My favorite it's the story about the Wailua River Boulders. You can read it at: http://legends4all.wordpress.com/2011/10/02/wailua-river-boulders/

Rent your own kayak and paddle down the easy river! At the end, dock your kayak on the shore and walk the 25 minute walk to Secret Falls! Take a dip; very refreshing. It's a great adventure. You may have to cross the rapid using the rope. Very Indianna Jones like!

Where ancient Hawaiians once built their temples and royal compounds, the Wailua River is the number-one destination on Kauai for paddling your own canoe or kayak. Plenty of outfitters at the start of the river near the coast rent gear, if you want to DIY, or you can sign up for a half-day tour that includes lunch and a guided waterfall walk.

Wailua River is the only navigable river in the state of Hawaii. You can rent kayaks and paddle down on it, or take a ferry boat ride and have a guided tour, or just do your own thing.
