Description

Waipahu is an area of southwestern Oahu that was historically one of the most prominent places in Hawaii. In fact, ancient Hawaiians considered this area their capital up until western contact. The name Waipahu can be broken apart to mean "water bursting forth" which is a nod to this area's fresh water artesian spring. Hawaiian chiefs gathered here regularly to enjoy the cool and clean waters bubbling from the ground here. Today, Waipahu is most well known for the forty acre Hawai'i Plantation Village. This living museum pays homage to Waipahu's historic association with sugar cane plantations that dates back 1897 with the Oahu Sugar Company. Other attractions include a number or parks and sporting facilities, in addition to the popular Waikele Premium Outlets.
