Head here to run on the Buehler Trail that circles the golf course for a pleasant 5k+ through the trees, with some hills worked in, then go the the hotel bar for a refreshing drink.Recommended for:

This hotel has an old southern and serious vibe to it. The rooms are modestly sized but very nicely decorated.
Dining room is very nice and large and well laid out. One side of the dining room is slightly elevated which is a nice touch if you are not seated along the windows. You will still have a nice view of the grounds from your table. The one negative I found about the dining room is that the table cloths did not appear to be pressed or well pressed. It's not something I usually look for but when it's not done or done less than well at a nice place like this, it's really noticeable. Other than that, the service is superb.
I loved walking the gardens. It's a large area and there's plenty to see. The water lilies are a must as is the asian themed garden just a short walk away to which you'll get to by crossing a criss-cross asian bridge. I was told the plant/flower varieties change throughout the year based on what's in blooming season.
There are also beautiful terraces for seating and taking in the surroundings. The hotel is off a main road so you will need a car to get anywhere outside of the hotel grounds.

The Washington Duke Inn is definitely a classy hotel. To start with, the grounds and golf course are gorgeous. Very serene. I probably felt most at home in the Bull Durham Bar, which has an English pub feel to it. I didn’t eat in the formal restaurant, but the food looked good and there’s some nice outdoor seating. The fitness center is a decent size for a hotel and the whole place fits nicely into the landscape, with good natural light and big windows in most common areas. The event spaces are elegant and I think it would be a great place for a wedding. The guest rooms are a bit small, unless you get a suite, but they are definitely nice and I love that they have Keurig coffee makers in every room. Overall, though, the place felt stuffy and cold to me, so I’m not sure it would be my first choice to stay here over some of the other options in the area.
