This has got to be some of the best public transportation in the world. The views are incredible and I always remember the cruises as being pleasant.
I have such fond memories of riding the ferry from Seattle to the San Juan Islands from when I was little. As a kid, it was the most exciting thing to be able to drive your car onto a boat. After Dad parked the car, we'd go up on deck and find a window-side booth to settle into. Mom and my brother and I would hook up the Gameboys and duel at Tetris while drinking Starbucks coffee - that was before anyone outside Washington knew what Starbucks was - and the beginning of my decent into a deep, decades-long Arabica addiction.

Travel on the Washington State Ferry system is a must. It is very casual with coffee, food and drinks available. You can see the City of Seattle skyline from a distance on one side and the wonderful Olympic Peninsula and mountains on the other. There are times that whales and sea otters can be spotted. You can be a walk on passenger and do a round trip or drive on and visit a variety of communities on the Peninsula all with their own personal charm.

Riding the ferry can be another fun family (or couples) excursion. Walk on rates are not bad at all and the excitement of riding on these amazing boats is parallel to none.
If you don't live near the water this is a great idea for a filler activity! It's not too long and if the weather is nice it's a great experience.
Dress warmly: even if the weather is nice the wind is quite intense on the ferry. If you get too cold you can still enjoy the experience from inside. Keep children in view: there aren't often accidents on the ferries but it is important to keep the kiddos close and not let them run off as the decks to get slippery.Recommended for:Family Travelers

The Washington State Ferry boats are really a hallmark of Seattle. While there is a wonderful short ferry ride to Bainbridge from the Seattle Waterfront, if you have the time or can make the time, schedule some rides from Anacortes and go to the San Juan Islands, too! Friday Harbor is a terrific place to spend the weekend. Try and schedule on a not so rough seas sort of day.

It is always a fun day when you take the ferry to one of the many islands around the Sound. Spend a day or more exploring all the sites. And nothing beats the view of Seattle city skyline on your return.
