Unbeatable 75-minute info-filled architecture river tour with a super knowledgeable guide for $25.
Cruise up and down the river while looking at some the buildings that make Chicago the Architecture Capital of the United States.
Learn about the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, Daniel Burnham, The Chicago School of Architecture, Art Deco Style, Post-Modern Style, reversal of the direction of the river, and why Chicago is REALLY called the Windy City (and it has nothing to do with the weather), and other history. Very factual, informative and straightforward.
#1) You can reserve your tours via phone and pick up tix at the window for no additional charge. It's best to reserve ahead of time if you are not flexible with your tour schedule. Tours do sell out.
#2) Line up early to get a good seat so you get the best views.
If you are sitting in the seats in the middle of the boat you'll need to keep turning your head to the right to look at the buildings the guide is referring to.
But, if you get the good seats, you don't need to turn your head much at all.
Good seat means those benches on the side of the boat that face the Wendella ticket office/Chicago Tribune/people in line. The guide keeps pointing out the buildings on the right side of the direction that the boat is going. Even when they turn the boat around, the guide still points to buildings you see on the right side of the boat.Recommended for:History Buffs

The staffers at Wendella are SO nice! They were very welcoming and understanding when we ran up to the dock 10 seconds before it was scheduled to sail away...
For a 2+ hour boat ride priced at $25, I believe we got our money's worth in most aspects. Yes, there were beautiful views of the buildings from the river and the Chicago skyline from Lake Michigan. Yes, we learned neat facts about Chicagio's architecture that a normal tourist would walk by without ever knowing. Yes, we obtained a few save-able pictures from the 2 hour ride. However, despite all this, I was left feeling a little unsatisfied and I cannot place my finger on it...
We signed up for the 7PM departure, which I thought was perfect due to the great lighting for pictures of the building and we were also able to see the sunset from Lake Michigan. The best picture I took though was right at dusk when we were about to dock by the river. I'm pretty sure if we took the 8PM departure though we would not have had such great pictures.
All in all, the river boat tour is something every tourist should do at least once. On the plus note, the two hour boat ride did not seem like two hours at all. AND they have a full service bar downstairs.
