Probably the most popular attraction in Edmonton, the West Edmonton Mall can really provide hours of entertainment for both kids and adults. In addition to the normal shopping mall shops, there’s also an amusement park, waterpark, ice skating rink, miniature golf courses, sea animal shows, pirate ship, casino, and museum, all indoors. The mall is huge, so look up a map beforehand to find out which entrance to park near for whichever attraction you’re heading towards. Most of the things for kids won’t really amuse adults, but I was quite impressed with the amusement park. It’s full of roller coasters and rides that range from mild to intense for all ages. It’s a different experience to ride roller coasters indoors where you feel like you’re about to run into the ceilings and walls. However, be prepared for the loud noises.

I have been to both the Mall of America and the West Edmonton Mall on several occassions. Both were developed by the same family. I prefer West Ed overall because of the water park, ice rink and other entertainment options that I think are a bit better than Mall of America. I imagine a Minus 40 weekend in Edmonton and with my son staying at the Fantasyland Hotel and spending the weekend in the water park, dining out in nice places, and wandering the mall. Then again, maybe my son and I would drive to Jasper (~4 hours away).
Another point: Edmonton has a lot more going for it than the West Edmonton Mall. The University of Alberta is here as is the stunning Saskatchewan River Valley. There's lots of opportunity for outdoor activities here in addition to various cultural festivals and performances in this very diverse city. The Strathcona District and watching the Edmonton Esks play CFL football are also fun outings.

I big shopping centres are your thing, you'll like West Ed. It's big, has a lot of different shops, a wave water park, midway, mini golf, dinner theatre, and a number of things I've probably forgotten. It's always loud and crowded but you'll probably be able to find whichever store you desire. I don't like going here but it is almost a necessary part of visiting Edmonton; everyone knows about the mall but probably nothing else about Edmonton so they will be disappointed you didn't visit the one thing they know.
