Wynn’s Hotel is a really great place to stay if you want to be in the centre of Dublin but you’re not looking for the loud and leery Temple Bar experience or you don’t want to shell out a fortune for one of the ‘luxury’ hotels. Staying here is a sort of old-world experience – the building has lots of history and character, the staff are good, old-fashioned polite and you need an actual key rather than a card to get into your room. The rooms are fine – traditionally decorated but on the small side and a little bit dark. But that wasn’t a deal-breaker for me at all because there’s so much to do nearby that you probably won’t be spending too much time in your room anyway.

Wynns is an old hotel that has worn extremely well with age. Many of the original fittings—the stained glass windows, the ancient elevator, the reception desk, the key cabinet—have stayed in place and successfully resisted the call to modernize. Part of that, now, is that the building is protected, which means the owners are legally unable to change much. The rooms are a bit cramped and lack some amenities, but you’ll forgive them for it. It’s a small hotel, and the people working there are enthusiastic and extremely pleasant to deal with. For technical reasons—because they’re restricted from a full renovation—the hotel faces a three-star glass ceiling. I am confident that this is easily the best hotel of its class in Dublin, far better value than you’d get at the same price at an anonymous budget chain.
