Ya Hala

Traditional and authentic Ya Hala is on point with flavor and quality. I ordered a veggie sampler with hummus, baba ganoush, tahini, falafel, stuffed grape leaves, diced veggies and all the pita bread you want for less than $11. There was more than enough to share. Everything was delicious and the service, lovely.

I was pleasantly surprised at the quality and servings I got at Roscoe's. It has the appearance of a dive bar yet serves an eclectic assortment of Cajun, southern food, and sushi. Not only that, but Roscoe's sushi choices are surprisingly affordable particularly in their style, cut, and quality.

The Cheese Bar is located in SE Portland was one of my first Portland haunts upon arrival in the city 3 years ago. Cheese Bar has a knowledgeable cheese staff (as you would expect from a place called Cheese Bar) and a wide variety of cheeses offered on a daily basis. Cheese Bar always has at least one cider on ...

Classic, traditional style looking book store. When I first entered I really liked the feel of the place. I could see that it went back for quite a ways but I was shocked how big the store was and how comprehensive and diverse their collection. I was even more surprised to find out that there is an even bigger location ...

Southeast Portland's sprawling Laurelhurst Park is an excellent place to picnic, take your dog, play frisbee or just hang out. There's an enormous duck pond that's popular with families (come equipped with a loaf of bread), large, open designated off-leash dog run areas, and plenty of picnic tables. In the summer, it's not unusual to see groups of people practicing ...

One of the only places I go to for my Asian groceries and goodies. It's a huge complex with a few good stores and restaurants on the block, and has a solid foundation for Vietnamese and Chinese goods. Stop by Meianna Bakery for pastries and the next door bubble tea shop, too!

My Teenage Son and I had dinner at the Kennedy School one night, of which I watched him devour large quantities of food. That much nutrition would have put me to bed early. However, I knew that he would be hungry again later in the evening. The cool, nearby, and busy New Seasons Market was a must stop. I found ...

If you find yourself in Southeast Portland, take a stroll through the charming Rhododendron Gardens across from Reed College. Though small, these gardens pack a lot into a small space - bridges and stairs, ponds full of geese, little benches nestled into forested nooks, and expanses of grass perfect for picnics. And, of course, the rhododendrons and other flower varieties, ...

I have enjoyed innumerable films at the Laurelhurst from newish movies like Pulp Fiction to Conan the Barbarian and Caddyshack II, all with a pitcher of stout and slice of cheese pizza. Townshend's is a teahouse and is unique in coffee-obsessed Portland. Tea connoisseurs will appreciate the options which abound at Townshend's. They even serve bubble tea, but I would avoid it. I asked for red bean bubble tea and it resembled tapioca filled with pepto bismol.

The McMenamin family was at the forefront of the theater-pub trend in Portland, and this gorgeously renovated vintage theater is the best of the best. Classic theater (as in plays)-style seats have been improved with long wooden tables, where ...

Sapphire Hotel used to be a bordello way back in the day. Don't be fooled by the name, it's instead a cool dimly lit bar with wine-red furnishings. The happy hour cocktail drinks are good as well as the food.
