Charleston's Yeager Airport on a hilltop, which drops off sharply on all sides. Hence, landing and taking off here (within the relatively short runway distance) is quite a visual and sometimes stormy adventure!
Yeager is small airport with just a few gates and somewhat basic services. At the same time, Yeager is a friendly place, easy to navigate and is has straightforward to and from Charleston proper. And it's one of the dwindling number of airports that your rental car is just a short walk from baggage claim.
Once you're in West Virginia proper, nothing is really a straight line from A to B, driving wise. My company has a manufacturing facility in the Willow Island area and some might argue that Columbus, Ohio might be a better airport choice. I just think that you get a better chance to experience this unique state by flying into Charleston first.
