When you're wandering the labyrinth streets of Old San'a (a UNESCO World Heritage Site in its entirety), Yemen's reputation as a hotbed of terrorism, kidnapping and tribalism is just about the furthest thing from your mind. Instead, you're thinking, 'This is what the Arabian Peninsula used to be like before oil, before the trappings of modernity.' No 'Arabia Lite' here like in Dubai. In Yemen, it's full flavor all the way, baby. Besides San'a and the ubiquitous chewing of the 'qat' (you'll find out what that is after you've been there more than five minutes) there's the Hanging Rock Palace just on the outskirts of the capital city, Aden on the coast for some killer beaches and Shibam, the Manhattan of Desert towards the Omani border. So don't believe the hype, come check out Yemen, the hidden jewel in the Crown of Arabia.
