Stunning scenery whichever direction you look in, a great place to go for a day, or to take a tent and stay for a week. Take your camera and plenty of water - you aren't going to want to miss a shot, and it can can really hot and dusty in the height of summer. Great to go with friends ...

The closest township to Yosemite Valley. Not a bad place to stay, not awesome either. There are a couple of motels that are near the river and have swimming pools. Those are the most "resort" like in terms of hanging out in the evenings, but again, El Portal is just a place to stay before heading into the Big Show ...

Nice small community at the top of the grade on your way to/from Yosemite, Pine Mountain Lake and other communities. Friendly shops and nice family run places to eat.

Stock up on all your needs in this Yosemite gateway town. If the weather's favorable, you don't need to spend the night here, but this is the town that has food and fuel you'll want to sustain yourself in and around Yosemite. Those things in Yosemite Valley are much more expensive, refill here before moving on.

Historic Gold Mining City. Well preserved and shows how the gold lived. The city kept its looks and feel of the mid 1800's.

A lovely stopping point along U.S. 395 and, together with Lee Vining, the entry way to Bodie. Highlighted by its courthouse, which dates from the late 1800s, none of the surrounding buildings are highlights by themselves but together form a comfortable little town to spend time in.
