Touristy and a bit crowded but a nice bit of green in the center of the city. One of the must-see spots on the tourist circuit in Shanghai.

Having avoided the Yu Gardens for nearly two years of living in Shanghai, I finally acquiesced and went to see what I was sure would be just another tourist trap. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the gardens themselves are very pretty, overflowing with flowers, trees and small waterways. Just outside this area however is the tourist extravaganza I was expecting: swindlers waiting to take advantage, "authentic" teahouses and a handful of Western imports like Dairy Queen and Haagen Daz. It's not a bad place to come if you're looking for kitschy souvenirs, but be advised that the place will be absolutely overrun on weekends and during peak times.

A walled garden in the heart of Shanghai's old city, this place was first established in the 1500's, and today is probably Shanghai's finest example of Chinese landscape architecture. It doesn't compete with the private gardens in nearby Suzhou, nor with the glory of Hangzhou's West Lake, but it's in a neat area of town, and the surrounding plaza is a cool place to shop for gifts, even if it's a bit of a tourist trap. Word to the wise: go right after opening or right before closing, or you'll never get a picture without someone else's head or arm in it.

Yu Yuan Gardens is an impressive garden in the heart of Shanghai. It's a good place to wander, sit and relax, especially after spending several hours walking around the city. It's also an old and historic garden dating back to 1559.Recommended for

A very historical and cultural icon in Shanghai. But it can be pretty crowded if you try to visit there during holiday or weekend. They do sell some foods and souvenirs, but they are pretty pricey. I would suggest you not buying from there, you can find exactly same stuff in other place s with 2 or 3 times cheaper.

Yuyuan Garden (not to be confused with Yuyuan Garden Bazaar outside the garden!) is a tranquil and very beautiful classic Chinese garden in the middle of a very large city. In places it is jaw-droppingly beautiful, but it can be hard to see with many other people around. It is one of the most-visited of the classic sights in Shanghai as you can tell by the throngs of people.
If you're also planning to go to Suzhou you may consider skipping this sight. Suzhou's gardens are both slightly better and also much less crowded (for the most part), but if you will only visit Shanghai on your trip then go to this garden and enjoy Chinese garden art.
