I've only tried a few places with deep dish pizza, so I have yet to get used to the concept of the sauce being on top. Probably shouldn't make a big deal out of it, because everything will end up in the same place. That place being my tummy. I totally get why Zachary's draws the masses in. Orders are placed ahead of time, as they take close to a half hour to make depending on the pie you choose. Once seated, your order comes to your table piping hot. I got to enjoy their spinach and mushroom, with pepperoni as an added extra. Very good stuff, this was. Unfortunately my hunger fooled me as I couldn't get past one slice. Bummer! That said, their small 10 inch pie is just right for splitting between 2 people.

Just across the Bay Bridge in Oakland's hip Rockridge neighborhood, Zachary's serves up classic, deep-dish and seriously dense Chicago-style pizza - a strong contender for the Bay Area's best pizza experience. They've won more awards than Meryl Streep, and a single slice -- stuffed with cheese, toppings, and a heavy tomato sauce -- practically qualifies as a meal in itself.Recommended for

This is a very busy place with probably the best pizza around. You can also call and order one that is half baked and finish it off in the flat's gas stove. See menu on line. Very popular place in the East Bay with two location. Closest one is on College Avenue.

Luv, luv, luv this place! It's always a MUST stop when I go up to the Bay Area.
They are known for their Chicago deep-dish pizza and boy, it's delicious! Just thinking about it makes me want to drive up north for a pie *drool* The wait is usually long, so expect a wait or get there early!
A must is their Spinach & Mushroom (Fresh spinach, mushrooms and a blend of three cheeses)! Don't even waste your time on the other choices if it is your first time here. You'll be in heaven....even a meat eater like me can't praise enough for this delicious pie!
PS, you'll always see some College kids around from Berkeley most likely.
Enjoy, I wish I was there right now!

I love Zachary's Chicago style pizza! Mmm, deep dish of tomato sauce, thick layer of cheese, and good amount of dough crust. All the toppings are soo good, mushrooms, sausages, chicken, you can't go wrong. Pizza should be thick with A LOT of sauce. The gourmet thin crust stuff is like eating crackers compared to this. I salivate every time I think of Zachary's. I would love to visit Chicago and get a taste of their pizza, until then, Zachary's is my top pizza place in the Bay.

wow! where do i begin with this review of zachary's pizza?!!
well i have been a true fan and great customer of zachary's for over 15 years now. this location was my first experience and a very magical one it was at that. i was taken here by a friend for a nice bite before a beastie boys concert at the coliseum. well it was early in the evening so we got our table and had a nice starter green salad with ranch then to my surprise this very large thick deep dish pizza pie! oh my gosh!! this thing looked so darn scrumptious! it was just a basic spinach and mushroom but to my surprise it was zachary's pride and joy. well i was sold! this thing was so good! bite after bite i was falling deeper and deeper in love with this place.
well we had a concert to get to and we had pizza to spare. i'm one to not waste food but this thing was big and after a slice or two i was stuffed. i can put away a good pie but this one got me good. i got it packed to go because i was not about to let this thing go to waste. we got out of there and went into the albertsons and i bought some ice and packed it up all nice so it would not spoil.
we went to the show and it was great but i think i got some sort of contact high because when i got home the rest of that pizza was all in my belly! ever since that one night and my first time at zachary's i have been back to all of the locations many times and i take my friends who have never been and it's like taking kids to disneyland for the first time.
these days whenever i go to zachary's i get the large and it last me for days. this is one of the few pizzas i enjoy cold just as much as i do hot. i'm also very thankful to have a location in san ramon because it's right down the street and my new favorite neighbor. i have to say i have been very lucky with very little or no wait for dine in or take out. i like to get a half-baked pizza at times too so i'm in and out in minutes.
i have never gone any other direction than the stuffed pizza and i never will. zachary's is a place you go to for a stuffed pizza and it's a sin to get anything else!

When a restaurant becomes too full of itself, I won't be coming back. And I don't care how good it is.
As so it was with this Zachary's a few years ago. I had an out-of-town guest (from Chicago no less) and we were anxious to see if the deep dish was comparable to the Windy City version. We never had the chance as we were told that we would have to wait in the reservation line first, and then continue on to a separate seating wait list line. We left soon after, especially it was clear that Zachary's staff was doing us a favour by this scheme.
Under a friends duress, I have slipped back occasionally for a tasty slice. However, that behaviour still offended me so much that I'll do almost anything to avoid this place.
